1950s-70s

1950s — conservative and restrained; certainly more classic in style and design, it was the glamour decade. The designs of Christian Dior’s New Look was very popular and inspired many new designs. The 50s introduced style icons like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress and shape fitted jackets. Soft silhouettes, corseted waists, and the pencil skirt was also extremely popular. Elle Fanning states “For my own style, I love vintage. 60's and 70's are my favorite. I love baby doll dresses and the soft colors. I try to mix a little bit of modern into that - maybe I'll wear it with boots. At my school we wear a uniform, but we have one day a week we can wear whatever we want.”

The 1960s saw the appearance of the mini-skirt, bare legs instead of stockings, usage for lace and hats worn by both women and men.

In the beginning of the 70s fashion became a big deal to the nation. women were wearing pants almost everyday and everywhere which was a huge shock. Female executives were wearing business suits with pants, women at home were wearing jeans.Fashion in the mid-to-late 1970s was dominated by suits. Leisure suits, pant suits, jump suits and track suits. Disco fashion was also introduced with high platforms, flashy colors and tight clothing for both women and men all influenced by music.
