1980s- Present Day

The 80s consisted of big shoulder pads bringing back the more  sophisticated and classy style. Dance and exercise wear was included at times along with the exposer of bright colors. Accessorizing wearing hair pins, fishnet stockings and earrings. Madonna’s style was copied by thousands.

The 90s consisted of a bunch of new fashion trends that was formed but also a lot of older trends began to come back. Outdoor apparel like a flannel shirt paired with a winter hat was a common look. Overalls, sideburns on guys during the mid 90s, and comfortable drawstring pants popularized by teen shows like Saved By The Bell. Gaudy Nylon Windbreaker jackets were a very popular 90s Fashion item as well as Doc Marten boots, ripped jeans, the flat top haircut, and backward caps. From the 1990s to present day we continue to see new trends exposed along with a comeback of other trends.

1950s-70s

1950s — conservative and restrained; certainly more classic in style and design, it was the glamour decade. The designs of Christian Dior’s New Look was very popular and inspired many new designs. The 50s introduced style icons like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress and shape fitted jackets. Soft silhouettes, corseted waists, and the pencil skirt was also extremely popular. Elle Fanning states “For my own style, I love vintage. 60's and 70's are my favorite. I love baby doll dresses and the soft colors. I try to mix a little bit of modern into that - maybe I'll wear it with boots. At my school we wear a uniform, but we have one day a week we can wear whatever we want.”

The 1960s saw the appearance of the mini-skirt, bare legs instead of stockings, usage for lace and hats worn by both women and men.

In the beginning of the 70s fashion became a big deal to the nation. women were wearing pants almost everyday and everywhere which was a huge shock. Female executives were wearing business suits with pants, women at home were wearing jeans.Fashion in the mid-to-late 1970s was dominated by suits. Leisure suits, pant suits, jump suits and track suits. Disco fashion was also introduced with high platforms, flashy colors and tight clothing for both women and men all influenced by music.

1920s-40s

In the 20s we reached the stage of freedom for teens and even adults. Women were now able to get out of the modern lifestyle. They were labeled as “Flappers.” Flappers showed a sense of rebellion and definitely shocked a lot of the older minorities, those who were use to being covered up in the early lifestyle. Flappers were a so-called new style of Western woman, and the term “flapper” was invented to describe this so-called new breed.Flappers were women who were characterized by their choice of bobbed hair, short skirts, and their enjoyment of jazz music. They enjoyed casual sex, drinking, immoderate makeup, driving cars and smoking. Colleen Moore states “They were smart and sophisticated, with an air of independence about them, and so casual about their looks and clothes and manners as to be almost slapdash. I don't know if I realized as soon as I began seeing them that they represented the wave of the future, but I do know I was drawn to them. I shared their restlessness, understood their determination to free themselves of the Victorian shackles of the pre-World War I era and find out for themselves what life was all about.”

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 the world was at war and high fashion was put off. Men went off to war and women started working in factories using wool and other fabrics to create uniforms for men. Japanese Silk was banned in the U.S. after Pearl Harbor and many women’s clothes were made out of nylon, including stockings. Shorts were introduced and women also began to wear jumpsuits. Fabric restriction played a huge part. women began exposing their midriffs and wear one piece bathing suites.

What's Difference Between Fashion and Style?

Style shows who and what you are. Fashion reveals the groups and categories people are in. Clothes can often separate people into groups. When you see a group of friends majority of the time they may have some similarity in style. Such as High schoolers. Fashion leans towards classifications and stereotyping which can become fairly a debatable topic because a lot of people have different perspectives and views when it comes to the subject. There are many reasons why a person may wear what they wear. Fashion is like a book it can tell a story about the person who wears it. Coco Chanel States “... Fashion has to deal with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Why Does Fashion Change Overtime?

The answer is as simple as the fact that people change. We look to culture to influence and change our personal style. Over time, the new replaces the old. People are influenced greatly by popular culture, including athletes, musicians, movie stars, politicians, royalty, as well as popular films, television shows, books and music. We also are influenced by the fashion industry’s advertising. - See more at: http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-do-fashions-change-over-time/#sthash.aH6JV4zw.dpuf
